FODMAP Diet: Understanding the Concept

What do you know about the FODMAP diet? This is a special diet that is designed for people with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Foods can activate certain digestive signs as well as improving the condition. This diet is focusing on low fermentable carbs so people with sensitive digestive system can avoid the symptoms as well as improving their condition.

So, what is this FODMAP diet about? Well, FODMAP alone is the short for Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides And Polyols. These are the terms classifying the carbohydrate groups that are notorisouly known for triggering digestive issues, such as stomach pain, gas, and bloating. Whereas one food may only contain one type of FODMAP, others may contain several. The sources of the FODMAP include:

  • Oligosaccharides, including garlic, onions, veggies, fruits, legumes, rye, and wheat
  • Disaccharides, including soft cheese, yogurt, and milk
  • Monosaccharides, including various fruits (mangoes and figs) and sweeteners (agave nectar and honey)
  • Polyols, including low calories sweeteners, some veggies and fruits (lyche and blackberries).
Naturally, there are some benefits to expect from this FODMAP diet, such as:

  • Reduced digestive issues, along with their symptoms. People with IBS often suffer from flatulence, reflux, bloating, bowel urgency, and stomach pain – with the latter is considered the hallmark of the condition. The condition can be annoying – in fact, affecting 25% of the patients. With the low diet of the FODMAP, the symptoms can be reduced to 75%
  • Quality of life increase. As it was mentioned before, digestive issues can affect the patients so when the symptoms are reduced, their quality of life is increasing. Not only they are free from the annoying discomfort or pain, they experience energy level increase. Of course, more scientific studies are needed to examine this phenomenon.

It doesn’t hurt to learn more about this type of diet, especially if you or your loved ones are suffering from IBS.
